So many obstacles

Posted on 2008-Jan-8 at 12:10 - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link

So many obstacles.

I don't understand why I don't write? Well I do - constantly (understand it) in my head  -I'm even rewriting parts of my life or even worse - other people's lives,  like it's my business - well  I guess I could turn it into my business - but that's not writing - only writing is writing.

Why don't I make the time for writing instead of looking for pictures of Marlon on alta vista???

Like the one above.

Chapter VII: Be Careless, Reckless! Be a Lion! be a Pirate! When you Write

Posted on 2008-Jan-3 at 12:29 - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

"Now I WANT to tell some things I've learned about writing from my class.

Though everybody is talented and original, often it does not break through for a long time. People are too scared, too self-conscious, too proud, too shy. They have been taught too many things about construction plot, unity, mass and coherence. ...They have been taught that writing is something special and not just talking on paper.

I found that many gifted people are so afraid of writing a poor story that they cannot summon the nerve to write a single sentence for months. I helped them by trying to make them feel freer and bolder.

Let her go! Be careless, reckless! Be a lion, be a pirate!"

I love New Years Eve! It's my favorite season. I got to spend the holidays with my family and friends, relax a little, eat alot and most importantly, drink lots of champagne!  I am just so thankful for everything right now.

2008 has started out well and I can't wait to start working - writing - again.

On my wish list:

A Literary Agent

A trip to New York would be great!

A Party

Structured Time

Being a Writer

Posted on 2007-Dec-19 at 08:05 - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

"Being a writer, I want to live in between the lines, where the depth is".

I found this quote today. It was stuck in my drawer. The funny thing is, I don't recall ever having seen this quote before. I don't even know from where I got it. I just know it's true.

Being a writer is difficult. Being a writer who is struggling to become a writer in her own eyes is even more difficult. My self -doubt  is killing me - softly.

I collect quotes. Quotes and affirmations give me comfort and lift my spirit - a daily practice.

Here are some of my favorite quotes:

"You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true."

"It is never to late to be what you might have been"

"Leap and the net will appear"

INT. THE DESIGNER WEDDING SHOW, NEW YORK - DAY

Greta, a tall stylish woman in her mid forties enters the exhibition center. She carries with her Gustavian chairs wrapped in plastic.

GRETA

Hi. I need to know where to take these?

SALESWOMAN

Oh, they're beautiful. Come right here with me.

INT. THE DESIGNER WEDDING SHOW, NEW YORK - CONTINUOUS

Susan, a woman in her twenties comes running carrying two cups of coffee.

SALESWOMAN

Will you be fine?

GRETA

Will we?

SUSAN

The flowers! They're in the car, in the cab, I mean!

GRETA

Run! What are you waiting for! Yes, we'll be fine.

Stop - for now.

What am I waiting for? I am on a journey. A writer's journey. I will be fine. I don't know if my script is salable. I just have to trust myself and my own truth and enjoy this as much as I can.

I can't even believe I am doing this! Scary, scary, scary.

Chapter VI: Know that There is Often Hidden In Us a Dormant Poet, Always Young and Alive

Posted on 2007-Dec-14 at 02:40 - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Chapter VI:

Know that There is Often Hidden In Us a Dormant Poet, Always Young and Alive

De Musset

"Inspiration does not come like a bolt, nor is it kinetic, energetic striving, but it comes into us slowly and quietly and all the time, though we must regurarly and every day give it a little chance to start flowing, prime it with a little solitude and idleness. I learned that you should feel when writing, not like Lord Byron on a mountain top, but like a child stringing beads in kindergarten, - happy, absorbed and quietly putting one bead on after another. [...]

I tell you all this because it is the way you are to feel when you are writing - happy, truthful and free ...With complete self-trust. Because you are a human being all you have to do is to get out truthfully what is in you and it will be interesting, it will be good. Salable? I don't know. But that is not the thing to think of - for a long time anyway."

Royal Swedish Meatballs with Parsley Dressed Carrots   Wine and Drinks

Food category: Main Course (all recipes within this category)
Main ingredient: Beef (all recipes with this ingredient)
Chef: Tina Nordström (all recipies from this chef)
Episode: Royal Swedish Meat Balls (about this episode)

Ingredients for serving 4 persons

Meatballs:
1 pound (500 grams) ground meat
3 slices white bread
1/2 cup (1 1/2 dl) milk
1 egg
3/4 cup (2 dl) finely chopped leeks
Butter and oil for frying

Dressed carrots:
10-12 small carrots
Water
Salt and pepper
1 tablespoon butter
1 finely chopped red onion

Parsley Sauce
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 1/4 cups (3 dl) milk
1/2 cup (1 dl) chopped parsley
Salt and pepper

This is how you do it

Meat Balls:
Mix the egg and the milk in a bowl. Cut off the crust of the bread and place in the bowl so that the bread soaks up the liquid and gets mushy. Mix in the ground meat and the leek. Season with salt and pepper and let it rest for 10 minutes. With wet hands, make small balls of the mixture. Fry them in oil and butter for 10 minutes. Make sure that they are done by testing one.

Parsley dressed carrots:
Scrub or peel the carrots. Put them in a pot and cover with water. Season with salt and pepper. Boil until soft.

Sauce:
Melt the butter in a pan and add the flour. Whisk in the milk. Let in boil for about 10 minutes. Stir every now and then. It should be thick and creamy. Season with salt and pepper.  Before serving, sieve off the water from the carrots. Mix the carrots with parsley and onion in the sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Serve with lingonberries (or cranberries if you can’t find lingonberries.)

The royal Swedish meatballs are lovely and juicy -- and that is exactly what the wine should be... But you do not have to be too picky.

Economy: beer
Mid-range: Wine from southern Italy, California, South Africa or Australia.
Gourmet: Barbareso, Italy.

Time Out

Posted on 2007-Dec-12 at 06:47 - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I've been taking a couple of days off from writing and reading. I realised that I'd been reading too many history books and that if I didn't stop, my new script would turn into a history peace and not a herstory.

Actually, I am the fastest reader in history. Always have been. When it comes to reading, no one can beat me - I scan through the pages. I am superwoman. (In contrast, I am not a very quick writer. I've never learnt to typewrite well. Simply, because I'm too impatient.) But I am learning to slow down, in my reading as well as in life.

Never allowing yourself to slow down, you take a huge risk. You risk missing out on the good parts. You risk missing out on some really good moments and ideas and those moments and those ideas may never come back.

What I know and I am still learning: Doing things quickly can actually slow things down.

Things I like to do when I am taking a time out:

Decorate

Watch sit-coms

Play music

Take a bath

Try a new recipe

Drink a glass of wine

Go for long walks

Play with my son!!!

On the writing process

Posted on 2007-Dec-9 at 01:27 - 3 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I am so enjoying this, I guess I am on a Gustavian high. At my parent's house I found this:

A vanity

A letter dated 1853, with a red seal

Silverware

I am meeting the antique dealer next week.

I am writing and doing daily research. I am making notes and collecting things like crazy, imaginary and real objects, which becomes my "secret" writing material. (The Swedish word for bureau is sekretär.) I like to surround myself with real props when I write - so that I can feel the texture, feel the text - It's crazy, I know...

I wouldn't want to work with anyone just yet, I enjoy my solitude very much - I believe all writers do. I wouldn't mind trying my screenplay on actors pretty soon though, before sending it off to agents. Gustavian Green. That is me right now. Any actor who'd comment on this weblog, I'd be thrilled to work with. I am just a sucker for compliments! When in doubt I shall ever finish this screenplay - I have several of unfinished screenplays in my head and in my sekretär - I think of you. My real and imaginary listener.

On my to do list:

Relax and not try too much - instead rely on a "peculiar passive clarity".

Chapter XVI: On Using the Imagination

Posted on 2007-Dec-9 at 12:08 - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

"I want to say something about using the imagination. Everybody has it, though not believing in it enough. People when they write, try to hard, try to force it. [...] but  now I know that imagination comes, works, when you're not trying, when you have a peculiar passive clarity. [...]

When you launch on a story, make your neck loose, feel free, good natured. and be lazy. Feel that you're going to throw it away. Try writing utterly unplanned stories and see what comes out. [...]

Here is another suggestion that might help you:

I have said that art is a generosity, i.e., you tell somebody something not to show off but because you want to share it with them. ...That is why it helps often to have an imaginary listener when you're writing, telling a story, so that you will be interesting and convincing throughout."

In his coronation robes. Its style is derived from the robes of king Charles XI who was the king which established absolutism first in Sweden.

Gustav III (24 January [O.S. 13 January] 174629 March 1792Note on dates) was King of Sweden from 1771 until his death. He was the eldest son of King Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia, sister of Frederick the Great.

Gustav was a benefactor of arts and literature. He founded several academies, among them the Swedish Academy, and had the Royal Swedish Opera built.

As he opposed the parliamentarian reforms that had been worked out before his reign, in the Age of Liberty, and as he spent high amounts on things that pleased him, he was controversial. To distract attention from this, he tried to expand Sweden's borders through a war against Russia, but the attempt was unsuccessful. In the end, Gustav was assassinated by a conspiracy of noblemen.
